Jump Rings

The universal connector: jump rings specified the only way that works — inner diameter, wire gauge, metal and closure.

Jump rings do more work than any other finding: they connect clasps, hang pendants, build chain maille and rescue designs that do not quite reach. They are a named line of this catalogue's findings section, and they are also the finding most often mis-ordered, because '6mm jump rings' describes at least a dozen different products once gauge, metal and closure are counted.

This page therefore works as a specification sheet. The findings range carries jump rings alongside its clasps, chains and bails; the current sizes, metals and finishes in stock are confirmed per SKU with your inquiry. Give the four-part spec below and the quote you receive will be for rings that actually fit your design — the alternative, a bag of almost-right rings, is the most common small loss in findings buying.

The four-part jump ring spec

  • Inner diameter, not outer. Ring sizes are traded by inner diameter (ID) because ID decides what the ring passes through and what it can hold. If your source size is an outer diameter, say so and give the wire gauge so the ID can be derived.
  • Wire gauge (thickness). The same 6mm ID ring in 0.8mm wire is a delicate connector; in 1.2mm wire it is a structural link. Gauge decides strength and how the ring sits in pliers.
  • Metal and finish. State the metal and the plating colour, matched to the rest of your findings — a ring is the most visible place where a mismatched finish shows.
  • Open or closed. Open rings are the production standard; closed (soldered) rings are for high-stress points. Name the closure, especially for pendant and clasp connections.

Minimums, units and packing

Jump ring minimums and prices are confirmed per SKU — by size, gauge, metal and finish. Send the four-part spec and your quantity in pieces or by weight as you buy them; the reply states the current line and its figures rather than a generic chart.

Buyer questions

What is the most common jump ring mistake?

Ordering by outer diameter. Two rings with the same outer diameter and different gauges have different inner diameters, and the smaller one will not take the bail or chain end you bought it for.

Which rings should hold a pendant?

A closed ring, or the heaviest gauge open ring in your design, at the pendant point — it takes the full swinging load. See pendant bails for the bail side of the connection.

Do you sell split rings too?

Split rings (the double-loop keyring style) are a different connector. If your design needs them, name them in your inquiry and we will confirm the current line.
