Mother of Pearl Beads
Beads cut from nacre shell — each one carrying its own play of light — and the grading checks that matter before you order.
Mother of pearl is the iridescent nacre lining of mollusc shells, cut and polished into beads that shift colour as they move. It is recorded in this catalogue as its own line — mother of pearl shell beads — within the shell section, and it is the premium end of that section: more luminous than freshwater shell, more individual than the shell pearl line, and priced by the quality of the nacre in the actual lot.
No two MOP beads are identical, because no two pieces of shell are. That individuality is the material's charm in focals, pendants and spacers, and its challenge in matched production work. This page sets out how MOP is honestly graded and bought — nacre depth, backing, shape and drilling — with prices and minimums confirmed per SKU against the lots in hand, the only basis on which nacre should ever be quoted.

How buyers spec mother of pearl
- Judge nacre depth, not shine in a photo. Deep nacre shows layered colour play as the bead turns; thin nacre looks flat grey-white off-angle. Ask for a short video or multi-angle photos of the actual lot before ordering focal quantities.
- State the backing. MOP beads can be single-sided (flat back) or fully rounded. Flat-back pieces suit bezels and gluing; rounds suit stringing. They are different SKUs at different yields.
- Match from one shell batch. For earrings and symmetrical necklaces, ask for pieces cut from the same shell batch and selected at packing — colour play is a per-shell property.
- Buy it drilled. Nacre layers can delaminate under a drill. Order the hole size you need; if you must drill, use a slow speed, water cooling and sacrificial pieces for setup.
Minimums, units and packing
Mother of pearl minimums and prices are confirmed per SKU and lot. Nacre quality is the price: a quote without the lot in hand is fiction. Send shape, size, backing and quantity, and the reply prices the actual graded lots available.
Buyer questions
Is mother of pearl the same as pearl?
They are the same material — nacre — in different forms: a pearl is nacre grown around a nucleus; a mother-of-pearl bead is nacre cut from the shell itself. Cut pieces show broader colour play and cost far less.
Does MOP yellow or fade?
Nacre is stable in normal wear but can dry and craze under harsh chemicals or long dry heat. Advise customers to keep it out of perfume and ultrasonic cleaners — the same care advice as for pearls.
Can MOP be engraved or carved?
Thick-cut MOP takes light carving and engraving well, which is why it appears in cameo-style focals. If your design needs carved shell, describe it in your inquiry and we will confirm what the current lots support.
